This is odd, but here we go. I haven't been around a good number of gay friends since I left VCU in 2002. But you seem intelligent so I'll ask. How do you deal with life when you know you're a straight man but find yourself identifying with...erm...butch lesbians? You find yourself hitting on Southern belles who look at you like you're nuts.... Well, yes, I do like college football and Aimee Mann/Indigo Girls/Natalie Merchant/everyone else on the Lilith Fair tour. Why does that make me odd?
Dear Newspaper hack, Hmmmm....I've gotta say your comment is appreciated, but it's got me a little perplexed as to how to answer. I'll give you some thoughts here and maybe e-mail ya with a longer comment. Obviously I'm not a straight man so I can't totally relate, but I think that societies norms. for sexual identity ( being masculine or feminine) are not realistic when applied to actual human beings. We're taught to believe that for example; men like sports, women like to shop etc. We all know people this isn't true of. Going deeper we're taught to believe women must look a certain way, wear makeup, cross their legs etc. Same for men. Human beings come in all shapes and sizes and in all forms--masculine women, feminine men, variations of that- Gay Masculine men, straight masculine women etc. Society wants to pigeonhole everyone, label them so everyone's comfortable and knows--ahhh--that persons like me, and frown that ones a weirdo-but the truth is we're all alike and we're all weirdos in a million different ways. My girlfriend really perplexes people. She's whats referred to by lesbians as a femme. She looks, and sounds like a straight girl. She loves to shop, makeup, clothes etc. No one would guess she's gay. Yet, she's attracted to butches. Ok I've rambled sorry. My advice to you is to love yourself for who you are and enjoy being a bit different than the pack. Diversity is a great thing, and I think you seem pretty cool.
